Our Smart Ocean chair was the first chair ever to be made from reclaimed ocean plastic. Our growing collection of Ocean chairs reflects our commitment to saving our oceans.
Each chair incorporates a significant amount of reclaimed fishing nets from the ocean. Widely regarded as the most harmful type of ocean plastic, discarded fishing nets "ghost fish" for years, damaging delicate ecosystems and the marine life that inhabit them.
By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans. We're creating products that begin to reverse the damage already done.
But we can only do so much. We challenge the rest of the industry to put in the hard work, and financial commitments, to make transformative impact on the Earth.
When we first set out to turn discarded fishing nets into chairs in 2016, no other manufacturer had yet accomplished this feat. This made for an arduous start, but has become one of our most
overwhelmingly impactful endeavors, with other manufacturers now following suit. Here's a bird's eye view at our journey that's only just begun.
Humanscale starts work with its first supplier to create the world's first task chair made from reclaimed fishing nets.
Humanscale and other like-minded companies establish the NextWave Initiative to reduce ocen-bound plastic through a network of commericial supply chains.
Smart Ocean is launched, becoming the first task chair ever to be made using recycled fishing net material.
Humanscale becomes the first company ever to offer not just one, but 26 products that are certified climate, energy and water positive. These products include Smart Ocean, Liberty Ocean, and Path.
Liberty Ocean is launched, joining the ranks of Smart Ocean in usage of reclaimed fishing net material.
Launched Path, The World's Most Sustainable Task Chair

Humanscale is a founding member of NextWave, an initiative where like-minded companies are looking to establish ocean-bound plastics as a commodity. Together, we are creating environmental and social benefits by creating the first global network of ocean-bound plastic supply chains.
We challenge the rest of the industry to put in the hard work, and financial commitments, to make transformative impact on the Earth.
